A website to help children learn the countries of europe

Mission

The mission of this project was to create an educational website aimed at helping children learn about the countries of Europe, with a particular focus on the European Union. The goal was to make it easier for them to recognize country flags, locate countries on a map, and identify country outlines. This project was developed as part of the Professional Skills 1 course.

Realization

The final product is a child-friendly website featuring six interactive minigames:

  1. Geolocator - Point out the correct country on the map, based on a given name or flag.
  2. Flag Quiz - Match the correct flag with the given country.
  3. Outline Recognition - Identify countries based on their outlines.
  4. Camera Flag Game - Hold up the correct flag to the webcam for recognition.
  5. Map Recognition Challenge - Identify countries shown on a randomized map.
  6. Mixed Mode - A randomized mix of all the above games for a comprehensive review.

The website is designed to be engaging, educational, and accessible for children.

My Contribution

As part of a team, I was responsible for two key components of the project:

  1. Country Locator Game - I developed the interactive mode where players select the correct country on a map. This task helped me deepen my understanding of JavaScript and explore its capabilities for building responsive, interactive web features.
  2. Website Hosting and Optimization - I handled the entire hosting setup. Initially, the site was hosted on a virtual machine running Windows Server within my personal Proxmox cluster. It has since been migrated to a more efficient setup using Nginx proxies (still on the proxmox cluster). To enhance performance and reduce load times, I also optimized all images and improved overall site responsiveness.
